Science
In teaching Science, I believe that students need to be given many exploratory opportunities to come up with their own hypotheses. We do this through experiments, discussions, research, and reading. We spend a lot of Science time working on how to interact with nonfiction texts and what we can learn from the different text features we find in a textbook. We have a fairly new Science textbook series that allows us to have a lot of opportunities to explore scientific concepts.
We move around in the textbook as the year progresses. We also use a lot of supplementary material and experiments to gain the insight needed to understand scientific concepts. This is to tie into the state standards and to connect with our other core subject areas. I love to watch students make connections throughout the day in different subject areas.
