Math
I believe in teaching math in a way that is hands-on and exploratory. Teaching math is a lot of fun for me. I enjoy watching students who have struggled with a concept, manipulate the numbers or shapes and all of the sudden have the lightbulb come on! I truly think that the combination of working with numbers on papers, manipulating numbers using model-drawing or objects, and word problem work is the key to good math instruction.
Every day, your child will participate in a 1-hour math block of core instruction. This will be in our classroom and will include several different teaching elements. Not only will we do whole-class instruction, but we will do guided math groups, based on individual student learning needs and styles.

Morning MathStudents will complete a Morning Math Journal throughout the year. Much of this will focus on using the calendar to work on graphing, counting money, working word problems, math vocabulary, place value, and other skills. It will also have review problems that will focus on basic facts in all four operations and weekly standard focuses.
Accelerated MathWithin the 1-hour math block, we will spend even more individualized instruction time with your student. Accelerated Math will play a big part in how this is carried out. A diagnostic test will be printed for students to do on Monday that we are doing a new skill. Students will be given this test and will fill out a scantron card with their answers. After putting their scantron cards through the scanner, we will be able to tell if they have mastered the skill that we're getting ready to work on. The students who do not master the skill will work on them the following week, using the Accelerated Math program. The goal will be to have each student to the mastery level by the following Friday.

Math WorkshopUsing the diagnostic data found through Accelerated Math and other preassessments, I'm able to differentiate students into groups, based on need.
Monday ~ Preassessment on Weekly Skill Whole-Class Instruction on new information Tuesday-Thursday ~ Math Rotation Stations & Guided Math During our Tier 1 Math time, we divide into groups to make sure that I am reteaching for those who need it and providing enrichment for those who need it. Students typically spend 20 minutes at each station, but this time is very flexible, depending on specific student need. Friday ~ Assessment Day |
